Mexicans celebrated Easter in the traditional manner, burning effigies of Donald Trump while shouting "death" and various other insults. Normally the ritual involves renditions of Judas Iscariot, but Trump was substituted in recognition of his campaign of insults against Mexico and his pledge to build a wall to keep them out of the U.S. Reuters reported that the papier-mache mock-ups were replete with blue blazer, red tie and his trademark tuft of orange hair. Trump still insists lots of Hispanics like him. The ones who don't want to burn him, for example.

2. Dion disowns UN rights rapporteur

Stephane Dion has asked the UN Human Rights Council to review the appointment of Western University law professor Michael Lynk as a Special Rapporteur on human rights in Palestine, urging the job should go to a "professional, neutral and credible" candidate. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs says Lynk's writing and views show a clear bias against Israel. Dion's office said it didn't nominate Lynk. Anyone can apply for a rapporteur's post. Lynk, it said, "does not represent the views of this government,"

3. California college rejects anti-Zion campaign

The University of California's Board of Regents has unanimously adopted a statement condemning anti-Semitism on its campuses the first public university system to do so since the birth of a campaign for economic boycotts of Israel on campuses. The statement, watered down after predictable cries of outrage about free speech, reads: "Anti-Semitism, anti-Semitic forms of anti-Zionism and other forms of discrimination have no place at the University of California." Nearly all the student governments in the sprawling University of California system have approved divestment demands, but none of the universities have complied. Which suggests the adults are still in control, thank God.

4. Saudis are too happy for elections: ambassador

Saudi Arabia's UN ambassador says there is no need for elections in the kingdom because the Saudi people are overwhelmingly pleased with the system of all-powerful monarchs and rich playboy princes. "The key question is: Is the population content and happy and satisfied with the form of government they have and I would like to claim if you went to Saudi Arabia and conducted a survey… you will find a high degree of support for the system," Abdallah al-Mouallimi said in an interview with Al Jazeera. Interviewer Mehdi Hasan suggested that was because they were afraid of going to jail if they criticized the ruling royals, but al-Mouallimi insistsed they'd say the same thing even if they weren't forced to: "I can tell you that mutual acceptance is much higher in Saudi Arabia than almost any other country in the world." He does think Syria should have an election though. It's only fair to give people a choice, after all.

Except maybe this guy: Just by coincidence, the Saudis sentenced a journalist to five years in prison Thursday, for ridiculing religious figures and accusing government security officers of killing protesters. Maybe he wanted to go.

5. No more sleeping in the showers

Ontario's Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Yasir Naqvi said union boss Smokey Thomas and an NDP legislature were lying when they reported that prisoners were being forced to sleep in the showers due to lack of space. Then on Saturday he found out it was true. Did he apologize? Of course not: Liberal ministers don't apologize, they bluster. "This practice is appalling‎, ‎completely unacceptable, and I have ordered its‎ immediate and permanent end," said Naqvi. "This practice should never have occurred and I want to be clear that it will never happen again. The Ministry has issued a directive which immediately and permanently prohibits any institution from engaging in this practice."

6. Ontario Liberals may pull the plug

The CBC suggests Kathleen Wynne may be about to prorogue the Ontario legislature. The evidence? There are only three serious bits of business that need passing, and they could be pushed through within weeks. The budget was introduced unusually early, for no good reason. The cabinet is tired and needs a shuffle, and the next election is two years away. Proroguing would also shut off the spotlight to new PC leader Patrick Brown. And Wynne refuses to deny she may pull the plug. Sounds credible to me: when all else fails, hide.
